Looking Back in Time

So I was trying to explain something the other day to a friend and wasn't really succeeding, so I thought I'd try writing it down instead in an attempt to really express the idea properly. Here goes: I want to find out what day the stars will be shining like they were really shining on the day that I was born. The light from the stars takes years to reach us. We're looking at what the stars looked like many years ago when we look up at the current night sky. Basically I want to find out how long it takes for that light to get to earth and look up at a current night sky that was actually current when I was born. It's kind of a confusing concept, and I don't know if it is even truly possible; I don't even know if this makes sense to anyone but me. I think in theory it's a good idea...but there are a lot of ideas that are good in theory.
